America promised to support our local economies hurt by free trade. That support has never come. Loosely applied band-aids have brought a few jobs that promptly leave when the band-aids fall off. Individuals in our communities are working hard to go beyond quick fixes, and they deserve a Congressman who will make the Federal government live up to its promise. Through vision, dedication, and cooperation we will rebuild our communities for generations to come.
To bring new jobs and rebuild our economy and our communities I support:
The Biofuels Industry — With the age of tobacco over and the market for alternative fuels growing, we have an opportunity. The growth of a biofuels industry will immediately create quality, high paying jobs, and opportunities will increase as the industry grows. These jobs will never go overseas.
Creating a Southside Research University — It is time for a generation of federally funded research universities in areas hurt by free trade. We have benefited greatly from land grant universities such as Virginia Tech and Virginia State, and we can do this again. We can start in Danville with a world class, four-year research University.
Raising the Minimum Wage — Many in our district are working hard in this economy, but not getting paid their fair share. Jesus told a gathering of workers they should eat and drink their share, for the laborer is worthy of his hire. We must follow this principle in America and pay everyone a fair living wage.
Refocusing HUB Zones — The United States Small Business Association has designated 11 of the 22 jurisdictions in our district as Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZones). Businesses in these areas that employ residents of these areas may receive preference for Federal contracts. Congress can focus this program on trade affected areas.
