Budget and National Debt

We must balance the budget and we must reduce the national debt.  If we fail to fix these fiscal problems, our children will inherit a crippled economy and a government that can’t provide needed services.

As a parent, I have always felt that it was my duty to try to provide for a bright future for my children.  Sadly, the way Congress has been handling the budget will lead to a dim future for our children.  The federal government is currently spending HALF A TRILLION DOLLARS more a year than it receives in taxes.  So far, the federal government has amassed OVER EIGHT TRILLION DOLLARS in debt.  That adds up to about $100,000 of debt for every child in America today.  When our children find out that we are leaving them our seven trillion dollar debt, I would be surprised if they ever speak to us again.

It was only a few short years ago that the budget was in surplus and we were on our way toward paying off the national debt.  Then Congress decided to pass multi-trillion dollar tax cuts for the super-rich and handouts to giant corporations which put us back in the red and put our children’s future back in doubt.

To balance the budget and pay off the national debt, in Congress I would support legislation to:

  • Eliminate the billions upon billions of dollars of welfare that giant corporations are given at the expense of the common taxpayer.
  • Include money owed to the Social Security Trust Fund in the accounting of the budget deficit and the national debt—we must stop raiding the Social Security Trust Fund to disguise the size of our deficit spending.
  • Reinstate “Pay-as-You-Go” budget rules that would demand that Congress could not pass new spending without finding the means to pay for it without borrowing more money.
  • Reduce waste and inefficiency in government.
  • A tax cut for the middle class and working families paid for by making the super-rich and giant corporations pay their fair share.
