This release is the third in a series of releases outlining Republican incumbent Virgil Goode’s pay to play politics.
Goode has gotten national attention for his connections to convicted felon Mitchell Wade, but his preferential treatment gets much more personal.
In 2003 Goode went out of his way to secure $150,000 in tax payer money for the North Theater in Danville. Goode’s press secretary, Linwood Duncan, and his wife, Lucy Goode, both sat on the board of directors of the theater. Duncan remains on the board. Before being awarded these federal funds, multiple members of the North Theatre’s board of directors contributed thousands of dollars to Goode. Roy Gignac, president of the theater, continues to give Goode money, including $2000 on September 6.
“Mr. Goode’s willingness to give taxpayer money to friends, family, and contributors is an abuse of power. We should be able to trust that our government gives out tax dollars based on merit and need. I will not recklessly give away our tax dollars. I will honor your trust,” said Al Weed.
Weed continued, “There are many organizations and individuals in central and Southside Virginia that would greatly benefit from government contracts or grants. Sadly, Mr. Goode looks to friends and contributors first and overlooks those who don't give him money. We deserve better.”
