Al Weed has received the endorsement of the Virginia AFL-CIO for his campaign for Congress.
“I am honored to have the endorsement of the AFL- CIO. I am running for Congress because I believe that too many hard working Americans are being ignored. Those who are committed to their families need the commitment of our government. We must ensure an honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work. We must ensure access to quality, affordable healthcare. We must ensure a secure retirement for American workers. We must ensure job security in our global economy. These are real issues faced by the American worker, and I will fight for these issues in Congress,” Weed said upon receiving the endorsement.
Weed continued, “The issues important to the AFL- CIO are the issues important to all workers in Virginia and in America. The current strike in Danville highlights the importantance of these issues. We must fight against the effects of free trade in our region and honor the rights of workers, both union and non-union.”
Over 2000 members of United Steel Workers local union 831 are currently on strike from Goodyear in Danville.
At a recent press conference Weed offered his support of the union and their cause. “What are at stake are the rights of all American workers to claim their fair share of productivity increases. George Bush – who is running the most anti-union administration since the turn of the century – claims our economy is strong. Corporate profits are growing, and the salary gap between CEOs and workers is expanding. It is immoral that this wealth is not shared with those who do the hard work that make it possible. The men and women of Goodyear are willing to put their jobs on the line not only for themselves but for all American workers.”
