This is the first of a series of releases outlining
Republican incumbent Virgil Goode’s pay to play
politics.
Goode has defended his relationship with convicted
felon Mitchell Wade by saying he was trying to “help
the district.” His argument loses credibility when it
is part of a pattern.
“Go over there and ask Sperry Marine if I haven’t
been working with them on getting things that they
want in the budget,” Virgil Goode said at a candidate
forum in August (min. 40). Goode did not
mention the company is his ninth largest
contributor.
“Washington really has changed Virgil Goode. This
Sperry Marine stuff highlights the biggest problem
with the MZM scandal. It’s not the illegal money; it’s
the pay to play politics. 'You help me get elected,
and I’ll help you make money.' He is elected to help
constituents, but he neglects them in the name of
contributors,” said Goode’s opponent, Al Weed.
Sperry Marine, a Charlottesville based subsidiary
company of Northrop Grummon, received a
$5,000,000 government contract in 2005.
This is just one of many. The $23,000 in donations
came from Northrop Grummon and its subsidiary
companies. The companies have clearly benefited
financially from the relationship, just as Mitchell
Wade did before he was convicted.
