After years of lining his campaign coffers with money
from oil and drilling companies, Republican incumbent
Virgil Goode has made no secret that he supports
drilling off the United States’ shores.
“This is just one more example of pay-to-play
politics. Energy independence is crucial to the future
of our country; we cannot leave it in the hands of
those who are beholden to big companies. My
priority will be to protect our family farms not big
corporations. The beauty is that the best solution to
a national problem also advances our region. That
should be the focus of our representative,” said
Goode’s opponent Al Weed
Goode recently
wrote, “I have voted consistently to allow
companies to drill for oil and natural gas in
environmentally friendly ways.” His claims about
being environmentally friendly are refuted by
numerous groups,
including the Republicans for Environmental
Protection,
which gave him only a 25% rating in 2005.
Goode has received nearly $60,000 from companies
and high-ranking individuals involved in oil and natural
gas drilling. There are no oil and gas resources in
Virginia's fifth congressional district.
With a steady stream of money coming in from oil
and natural gas interests, it comes as no surprise
that Goode supports drilling in the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, off the shore of Texas, and
even off the eastern seaboard. Goode speaks of the
need for America to be free of its dependence on
foreign oil. The solution to that problem is biofuels,
conservation, and other alternative energy sources,
not additional offshore drilling. It would be nice to
see Goode free of his dependence on special interest
money.
