Yesterday Republican Virgil Goode said fellow Republican and Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, has done nothing wrong and should not resign.
Today, Curt Gleeson, a spokesman for Al Weed posed a very simple question to Virgil Goode:
"If Mr. Goode found out that a 52 year old Congressman sent an email a 16 year old boy – an email the boy described as 'sick' – would Mr. Goode have done the same thing that Mr. Hastert did or would he have launched an investigation?”
One year ago Hastert’s office received notice of abominable and potentially illegal sexual emails to minors by another Republican congressman. At that time, Mr. Hastert did nothing. This fall another member of the Republican leadership, Tom Reynolds, discussed the matter with Hastert. Now Mr. Hastert continues to protect himself and his power by neither denying nor acknowledging the conversation.
"If Mr. Goode thinks that sweeping it all under the carpet was the appropriate way to deal with the situation, then this is just one more example of how Washington changed Virgil Goode," says Democratic nominee Al Weed. "If Dennis Hastert was a Democrat, Mr. Goode would be calling for his head. Instead he is defending a failure to act that resulted in other children being targeted by Mark Foley. Virgil Goode is just another congressman caught up in the belief that those in Washington are above the law. He should denounce the cover-up. Otherwise he is complicit in the protection of power over the protection of children."
