Al Weed for Congress changed a word in their recent
television ad. Instead of identifying one of Virgil
Goode’s associates as a “felon” they will refer to him
as a “criminal.” Berglund and his former boss
Mitchell Wade, a felon, have pled guilty to knowingly
and willingly funneling illegal contributions to Goode’s
campaign. In return Goode wrote an earmark worth
$15 million dollars in unwanted Pentagon contracts
for the men. The ad can be viewed at goodefacts.com<
/a>.
In a previous version of the ad Berglund was
mistakenly identified as a felon. Further investigation
showed that while he could have been charged with
a felony, the federal prosecutor had him plead guilty
to a misdemeanor. Berglund will be sentenced in
November, and could spend up to a year in federal
prison for funneling the money to Goode.
Weed released a statement with an apology to Mr.
Berglund. The Democrat stood firm behind the
ad, “The troubling facts behind Mr. Goode’s behavior
stand.” He continued, “The details of Mr. Berglund’s
plea are immaterial to the fact that our Congressman
worked for his contributors, not his
constituents.”
Curt Gleeson, spokesman for Weed’s campaign,
commented on the correction saying, “We’ve made
the correction in language. We hope the voters
make the correction on Election Day. It is important
that voters know the truth about their
Congressman’s actions.”
