"Republicans say they are strong on security, but I’m
standing with a lot of Democrats today who have
proudly worn the uniform of the United States
Military," said Sergeant Major Douglass Randolph
from
Charlotte County. He was joined by more than 25
veterans including Staff Sergeant Bob Slaughter of
Bedford, who landed on Omaha Beach during D- Day.
Veterans from every conflict from WWII through Iraq
came togehter at the National D-Day Memorial in
support of Command Sergeant Major Al Weed's
campaign for Congress. All expressed opposition to
the current war in Iraq, and anger at the lack
support of veterans of all ages.
Specialist James Wilson, who now
lives in Albemarle
County, spoke on his two tours in Operation Iraqi
Freedom, and his troubles upon his return to Walter
Reed Army Medical Center. Specialist Wilson suffers
from Traumatic Brain Injury, which he received when
his Humvee was blown up by an IED. The doctors at
WRAMC initially did not believe Specialist Wilson.
Although they later changed his diagnosis, his
treatment, both personally and medically, has been
less than he deserves.
"Earlier this year Mr. Goode signed a letter by Dr.
George Zitnay calling for TBI funding to be increased
to 19 million dollars. When the Republicans ignored
the request and cut the funding in half – to only 7
million dollars – he dutifully kept his mouth shut. All
he can do for Specialist Wilson is sign a letter," Weed
said during his remarks.
Weed continued to assail Republican failures to
support our veterans. "What [Mr. Goode] won’t say
is that he voted against 53 million dollars in additional
veteran’s healthcare funding, when that bill needed
just one more vote to pass," Weed
continued.
Staff Sergeant Slaughter was
very critical of the
current powers in Washington, "Those in power will
say my opposition to the war aids the terrorists. How
dare they question my patriotism? I have fought
under our flag. I have been twice wounded in battle.
I have stood up in defense of the principles of
freedom. Today I proudly, and with great patriotism,
exercise that freedom and stand against this failed
war."
Herman Schmidt of Charlotte
County, began the
event by reading a passage from The Genius of the
People, a book on the Constitutional Convention. "For
all their indecision about some questions, the
delegates were definitely and unanimously clear on
one: The Executive should not have the power of
war and peace...None wanted an executive who
could use the excuse of sudden or continuing crisis
to gather more and more powers to himself."
Weed was honored to stand with so many men and
women dedicated to our country and its Armed
Forces. "Our security relies on its strength, and its
strength relies on the dedication of the men and
women in uniform," he said. He promised as a veteran
in Congress he would be a loud and effective voice
for veteran’s issues.
