Al Weed’s campaign for Congress began running its
first television commercial this week. The ad
begins, “Washington changed Virgil Goode,” and
shows a photograph of Mitchell Wade, Virgil Goode,
and Richard Berglund.
“Our government must work for us again, not for
corrupt
people like Mitchell Wade and Richard Berglund. Mr.
Goode has changed and is now part of the
Republican culture of corruption in Washington,”
Weed said.
Goode received nearly $100,000 in campaign
contributions from people associated with MZM.
Much of that was illegally funneled to his campaign
from Wade and Berglund. In the days just before
and after Goode received the bulk of that money he
wrote an earmark that resulted in Pentagon
contracts worth $15 million dollars for Wade and
Berglund.
Weed said it is important that the voters know the
facts about Virgil Goode’s dealings. He also said the
election is about more than corruption. “This race is
not about Mitchell Wade and MZM. It is about the
future of our district, our state, and our country. In
central and Southside Virginia are some of the
strongest and most unique communities in America.
We can have more than low wages and lost jobs. I
will build on our strengths. I will get the support we
deserve from Washington. Democratic governors in
Virginia have worked, and are working hard for us.
It’s time to send a Democrat to Washington,” Weed
said.
The photograph in the ad was taken at the ribbon
cutting ceremony of MZM Inc. in Martinsville two
years ago. That day Wade and Goode promised that
MZM would eventually employ 150 people with a
payroll of nearly $9 million. Since that day, both
Wade and Berglund have been convicted of giving
Goode illegal money. The Pentagon has terminated
the contract and the facility has closed. Only 23
employees were hired with a payroll of just over $1
million.
The ad, along with the details and facts behind it
and the MZM scandal can be viewed at www.goodefacts.
