Al Weed’s Military Biography
Al spent forty-two years as an enlisted man, rising to the rank of Command Sergeant Major (CSM), which he had held for over twenty years when he retired in 2002. For most of his career he served in Army and Joint Special Operations, serving as the senior non-commissioned officer at every level from A-Detachment to Special Operations Command.
After starting out in the US Naval Reserve, Al served four years on active duty in the Army Special Forces, including tours in Panama and in Viet Nam as a Special Forces medical sergeant. When he returned to college, Al was a drilling member of US Army Reserve and National Guard Special Forces units. He became the Command Sergeant Major of a Civil Affairs Battalion and remained there until 1996, when he was recalled to 10 months of active duty as the CSM for Special Operations Command, Europe during the initial Bosnia deployments. Following this deployment, he served a three-year tour in the Virginia Army National Guard and almost two years in Joint Special Operations before his mandatory retirement at age 60.
Al's decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (our nation's second highest peacetime award), the Legion of Merit (the Army's second highest peacetime award) a Bronze Star for meritorious service in Viet Nam, the Combat Medical Badge and Master Parachutist's Wings.
